Dear Carrie ____,You recently had a 1st trimester screening at the Perinatal Clinic at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Meriter Hospital/Park Campus. The results of your 1st trimester screen show that your risk for Down syndrome, trisomy 13 and trisomy 18 are all WITHIN NORMAL LIMITS. [emphasis theirs]Because this is a screening test, it does not rule out the possibility of Down syndrome, trisomy 13 or trisomy 18 in your pregnancy, and it does not screen for other problems. Since this test does not screen for neural tube defects (openings along the spine or skull) or other structural problems, a blood test measuring alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) test at 15-18 weeks, and an ultrasound at 18-22 weeks are recommended. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions at (blah, blah, blah, blah)

Does this not make you wonder why anyone would bother with this test anyway? Though as Big Daddy put it, “Yay! We don’t have any more reason to worry than anyone else!” I also found the bold, underline result kind of funny. My risk for my age, btw, is 1 out of465.

CJ’s beautiful girls notwithstanding, this was a good result.
